SPU Run Funds Needy Students

The long-awaited marathon at St Paul’s University, organized to raise funds for needy students, took place on Saturday.
Staff, students and partners from the institution joined the event branded Elimu Bora Run 2026.
The race featured 5km, 10km and 15km categories through Tigoni and Kabuku, and was launched by SPU Vice Chancellor Prof Esther Mombo at the main campus in Limuru sub county.
Morning fog and mist blanketed the area, and participants were accompanied by traffic officers and police under Tigoni OCS Christine Mundanya to manage vehicles along the route.
Prof Mombo said the university seeks to build an endowment kitty to assist needy students who wish to continue their education.
She added that the event also united communities near the institution with partners, giving them an opportunity to exercise together.
“As we raise the endowment kitty to support needy students in their academic journey because they cannot afford it, this is also a time to share with communities and partners and learn from one another,” the vice chancellor said.
Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof Abraham Waithima said the university plans to hold the event every year.
Sponsors and partners who helped make Elimu Bora Run 2026 successful included The Cooperative Bank of Kenya as anchor sponsor, The National Bank of Kenya (NBK), NCBA and Kenya Extended Producer Responsibility Organization (KEPRO).
Others included Matthew 28 Ministries, Inc, Coca-Cola, Lifecare Hospitals, St. Bridget Hospital and Ladnan Hospital.
Student James Njoroge praised SPU for the initiative, saying it would reduce the number of bright students unable to pursue further education.
“This is a strategy that will help many needy students access quality education. Looking at the issue from both sides, a supported needy student will never forget and will be instilled with the value of supporting education,” Njoroge said.
