KNEC Opens Grade 10 Assessment Registration – Deadline July 30

KNEC has begun accepting Grade 10 student registrations through its Competency‑Based Assessment portal, with all senior schools required to finish by July 30 2026.
Through a notice to principals, KNEC instructed every registered senior‑school assessment centre to enrol its Grade 10 pupils via the SBA portal, setting the stage for the initial CBE‑based assessments at senior level.
Registered centres now can add Grade 10 learners to the SBA portal,” KNEC announced.
This step follows the May 22 deadline that closed the registration of senior‑school assessment centres.
Only those schools that successfully registered as assessment centres on the CBA platform may now add learners for the assessment.
The move represents a pivotal moment in CBE deployment, since the current Grade 10 cohort will be the first to transition to senior school.
KNEC said the registration is vital for organising the school‑based assessments, which will include projects, practical work and written tests conducted within schools.
The project and practical phases will run from May to September, while the written component will take place during the third term and wrap up by October 2026.
Schools must use the new universal centre code, created when they registered as assessment centres, to log into the CBA portal.
The code functions as both username and password.
KNEC will issue further assessment‑management guidelines to schools in the near future.
Schools are expected to upload learner scores without delay and keep records of completed tasks for reporting and verification.
The Grade 10 school‑based tests are part of a wider framework that culminates in the Kenya Certificate of Basic Education (KCBE), which students will sit for at the end of Grade 12.
Under the CBE scheme, final KCBE marks combine school‑based assessments with the national Grade 12 summative exam.
Grade 10 and Grade 11 SBA results each account for 15 % of the final KCBE score, together making up 30 %.
The Grade 12 summative test contributes the remaining 70 %.
Grade 10 assessments also lay the groundwork for the pilot senior‑school summative exam slated for 2027, when the pioneer CBE cohort reaches Grade 11.
Education stakeholders have watched the senior‑school rollout closely, as the framework is expected to be key in monitoring learners’ mastery, practical skills and overall competency over the three‑year cycle.
