The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has raised alarm over pressing humanitarian demands as thousands of individuals escape Ethiopia into Moyale, Kenya, driven by continuing violence in Ethiopia. By October 22, 2026, an estimated 50,000 individuals had crossed the frontier, with totals expected to rise further as registration and verification procedures proceed alongside ongoing arrivals. Substantial cross-border migration has been documented since October 22, local officials noting that up to 50,000 people have entered Kenya while numbers fluctuate due to continuous assessments and fresh crossings. Women and children make up the largest share of those escaping Ethiopia, with officials reporting that some individuals are residing with family and local residents while others find refuge in temporary sites such as schools and churches. Amid the expanding refugee population, the UN Refugee Agency emphasizes that food is the most critical requirement, accompanied by clean drinking water, emergency lodging, sanitation services, and medical care. The agency has already dispatched emergency relief goods, encompassing essential household provisions and temporary shelter gear, to aid nearly 12,000 individuals while working to expand support operations as demands increase. Furthermore, an emergency unit has been dispatched to Moyale to collaborate closely with the Kenyan government via the Department of Refugee Services and regional officials, alongside the International Organization for Migration, UNICEF, the World Food Programme, the Kenya Red Cross Society, and additional relief organizations to bolster national and regional response efforts. Authorities and partners are actively coordinating to determine more secure housing alternatives located at a greater distance from the boundary for individuals escaping the conflict.
