Through an official statement, Kisumu Deputy Governor Mathew Owili denounced the occurrence, labeling it as ‘cowardly, criminal, and completely reprehensible.’
The senator allegedly faced the assault at a retail establishment in Kisumu’s central business district, triggering extensive apprehension regarding escalating political intolerance.
‘This flagrant violence has no rightful position within our community and directly contradicts the principles of law enforcement, public tranquility, and the democratic ideals we cherish,’ Owili stated.
The Deputy Governor, speaking for the county leadership under Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, highlighted that the assault transcends mere aggression against a solitary political figure.
‘This represents not just an assault on a leader but an attack on the fundamental structure of civility, tolerance, and harmonious coexistence that characterizes our county,’ he emphasized.
Recent progressions follow initial reports by the Kisii Press Club, which underscored the disturbing character of the incident and the political context enveloping the assault.
The assault has subsequently provoked condemnation from leaders throughout the region, with numerous cautioning against a potential revival of politically incited aggression.
Owili appealed to the National Police Service (NPS) and additional security institutions to respond promptly, directing them to ‘proceed with maximum velocity, accuracy, and resolve’ to probe the circumstances and ensure accountability for the perpetrators.
‘Impunity cannot be tolerated,’ he added.
He additionally emphasized the critical nature of protecting democratic liberties, noting that all citizens possess the right to express differing perspectives without apprehension of coercion or injury.
‘Differing perspectives do not validate unlawful behavior. It forms an essential foundation of democratic participation and must always be met with tolerance and deference,’ Owili explained.
Kisumu County leadership has additionally delivered a stern caution against any manifestation of political aggression, pledging absolute intolerance for actions that jeopardize peace and stability.
