The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has urged the National Police Service (NPS) to promptly identify, apprehend, and bring to justice individuals responsible for assaulting Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi in Kisumu.
According to a statement issued by ODM Chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, she firmly denounced the incident as a cowardly and unlawful act. She highlighted that violence has no role in Kenya’s democratic environment.
“Assaulting a leader over their opinions or affiliations constitutes an attack on the democratic framework that Kenyans tirelessly established. Violence cannot be justified as a method of political disagreement,” Wanga stated.
Wanga reaffirmed that ODM opposes intimidation, coercion, and political violence, emphasizing that the party’s foundation rests on social democracy, pluralism, and constitutional principles.
She noted that the ODM Party Constitution pledges to uphold human rights and eradicate tribalism, harassment, and oppression, while preserving freedom of expression and human dignity.
In a separate development, Kisumu Deputy Governor Mathews Owili also condemned the assault, calling it regrettable and contrary to Kenyan values.
He guaranteed the safety of residents and leaders, calling upon security forces to take firm measures and ensure peace in the lakeside region.
Wanga wished Senator Osotsi a speedy recovery and conveyed her support to him, his family, and all Kenyans committed to peaceful political participation.
She further advised against stereotyping the people of Kisumu, noting that criminal behavior should not lead to the judgment of entire communities.
