Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has been handed a combined fine of KSh 21 million, with an alternative of 13 years behind bars, after being found guilty in a money laundering trial tied to the fraudulent award of a KSh 588.7 million road contract while he led the county.
At the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court, Chief Magistrate Harrison Barasa delivered the ruling against Waititu across three distinct charges stemming from the disputed Kiambu County road procurement process under his leadership.
On the tenth count, the former governor received a fine of KSh 10 million or a five-year prison term in default, while the eleventh count brought a KSh 6 million fine or four years in prison, and the twelfth count carried an additional KSh 5 million fine or another four years.
Susan Wangari Ndung’u, who is Waititu’s wife, alongside several other individuals and corporate entities connected to the contract, faced charges alongside the former county chief.
Magistrate Barasa noted that the penalties were tailored to the specific degree of responsibility and direct participation of each defendant in the illegal acts.
During mitigation arguments presented on October 27, 2026, Waititu and his co-defendants asked for mercy, requesting the judiciary to weigh their domestic responsibilities and connections to the firms involved in the multimillion-shilling scandal, emphasizing that they had no prior criminal records.
Ferdinand expressed remorse before the bench for his actions, pleading for a reduced penalty on the grounds that both he and his spouse were encountering the judicial system for the first time.
I apologise for whatever wrong I did. I am a first offender together with my wife, so when sentencing, please consider that, Waititu stated.
Waititu further urged the bench to factor in his wife’s minimal participation regarding Delta Hotel, pointing out that the enterprise maintained a board of directors and that she played no part in its routine management.
