Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu Sentenced in Ksh588M Graft Case

Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has received an additional 13-year prison sentence in connection with the Ksh588 million corruption and money-laundering scandal involving public funds diverted from Kiambu County while he was in office. The Milimani High Court delivered the sentencing on Monday, November 2, imposing multiple prison terms totaling 13 years alongside a combined fine of Ksh21 million. Justice Harrison Barasa handed down five years for Count 10, four years for Count 11, and an additional four years for Count 12, culminating in the 13-year total. The magistrate stipulated that failure to settle the Ksh21 million fine would result in the enforcement of the alternative custodial terms for the respective counts. Taking into account the arguments from both sides, the seriousness of the crimes, and relevant legal frameworks, the judge outlined the penalties for each count, including a Ksh10 million fine or five-year default imprisonment for the tenth charge. Nevertheless, Waititu will not spend extra time behind bars due to these recent rulings. The judiciary ordered that these new penalties run concurrently with an ongoing sentence from a separate corruption matter. Consequently, the fresh terms will be served alongside his current imprisonment rather than consecutively. The court confirmed that the execution of these sentences would align with previous directives issued by the High Court during its ruling on October 14, 2026. This integration follows earlier legal provisions established under the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act. Simultaneously, Waititu’s spouse, Susan Wangari, faced judicial penalties regarding three money-laundering charges. The judiciary ordered her to pay a Ksh12 million fine for Count 10, a two-year prison sentence or a Ksh2 million fine for Count 11, and an additional Ksh8 million fine for Count 12, elevating her total financial penalties to Ksh22 million.
