Police in Kibwezi, Makueni County are hunting two individuals connected to a failed highway robbery that resulted in the death of one accomplice who was accidentally shot during the crime. Police reports indicate the incident took place at Kambu on the heavily trafficked Mombasa-Nairobi highway. The victim, a driver transporting a recently purchased Subaru from Mombasa toward Nairobi, explained that as he neared the Mutomo area, one suspect pretended to be a person on crutches crossing the roadside. This caused the driver to reduce speed, enabling two other accomplices to approach and command him to stop. According to the injured driver’s statement, one of the suspects produced a gun and fired at him. He avoided being hit by quickly moving his head. The bullet instead hit the accomplice who had been feigning a disability and attempting to enter the passenger side. The suspect died immediately. The driver sustained injuries and is currently receiving care at Kambu Sub-County Hospital. The deceased suspect’s body has been transported to the same facility’s mortuary. Police have observed an increase in similar highway robbery incidents along the Mombasa-Nairobi route, with criminals increasingly employing deceptive methods to halt unsuspecting drivers. Authorities have initiated a search for the two suspects who escaped the scene on a motorcycle and are advising drivers to stay alert as the investigation proceeds.
