Kenya Welcomes International Policing and Crime Seminar

by KenyaPolls

Kenya is hosting an international seminar bringing together law enforcement officers, security practitioners and policing experts from different countries to strengthen professional policing, improve crime management and enhance investigative capacity.

The International Seminar on Advancing Professional Policing and Crime Management was officially opened on Monday, November 2, 2026, at the National Criminal Investigations Academy (NCIA) in South C, Nairobi.

Inspector General of the National Police Service Douglas Kanja was the chief guest but was represented at the opening ceremony by Director of Corporate Communication and NPS Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, who delivered his remarks.

In his address, Kanja called on law enforcement agencies to embrace innovative, adaptive and forward-looking approaches to investigations, warning that the changing nature of crime and increasingly sophisticated criminal networks required equally advanced responses.

He emphasised the need for police agencies to evolve faster than the criminals they pursue, identifying technology as a critical tool in strengthening investigative capabilities and improving the effectiveness of law enforcement.

The Inspector General also underscored public trust as a fundamental pillar of effective policing, saying professionalism, integrity and accountability must remain central to police operations.

He noted that investigative effectiveness must go hand in hand with respect for individual rights and the principles of justice.

Welcoming international delegates, Kanja described the seminar as an important platform for sharing experiences, exchanging best practices and establishing lasting professional relationships among law enforcement agencies.

He urged participants to draw practical lessons from the engagement and apply the knowledge gained to improve investigations and policing standards in their respective countries.

The seminar aims to strengthen professional, ethical and accountable policing while equipping investigators with technological skills and competencies to respond to an increasingly complex global crime environment.

Speaking on behalf of the NCIA Commandant, Chief Instructor Solomon Musai welcomed the delegates and highlighted the academy’s growing international recognition as a law enforcement training institution.

Musai disclosed that NCIA had recently been admitted to the INTERPOL Global Academy Network following a signing ceremony at INTERPOL headquarters in Lyon, France.

He said the recognition further affirmed the academy’s position as an international centre for law enforcement training and enhanced its capacity to host high-level professional engagements.

The seminar is being hosted by the International Police Association (IPA), an organisation founded on the motto Servo per Amikeco (Service Through Friendship).

The association brings together serving and retired police officers from 71 member countries, providing a platform for international friendship, professional interaction and the exchange of policing experiences.

Running from November 1 to 6, the seminar has attracted participants from several countries, including Germany, Japan, Norway and Italy, as well as representatives from Kenyan universities and institutions such as the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and KCB Bank.

Among those attending the opening ceremony were IPA Chairperson of the Socio-Cultural Commission Christos Parginos of Greece, Daniel Lorch of IPA Germany and IPA Kenya Section President Dr Jared Ojuok.

Others included EACC Deputy Director of Forensic Investigations Ignatius Wekesa and IPA Kenya Second Vice President in charge of Professional Commission and Training Boniface Otieno.

The gathering comes amid growing calls for stronger international cooperation and technological innovation in tackling increasingly sophisticated forms of crime, with cross-border partnerships emerging as a critical component of modern law enforcement.
