Kisumu County residents, traders, matatu operators, and bodaboda riders will soon experience improved transportation as the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) resumes work on the Mamboleo Chemelil road. This Sh16.7 billion project aims to revolutionize transport and commerce throughout the area.
Engineer Friedrich Oyuga, KeNHA’s Nyanza Regional Director, confirmed that construction work on the road has restarted after funding issues previously caused delays. The government has now allocated required funds, with completion expected by July next year. Oyuga emphasized the road’s importance as a vital connection between Kisumu, Kericho, and Nandi counties, stating their commitment to meeting the deadline.
Engineer Munyi Catherine, overseeing construction at Mamboleo, highlighted the need for high-quality road construction due to industrial activity in the corridor. “We are developing a modern roadway capable of supporting heavy industrial transport, which will significantly improve conditions for local residents and businesses,” she explained.
Ben Adega, Kajulu Ward Representative, welcomed the project while urging KeNHA to address other essential infrastructure needs during construction. “We support this initiative, but improving health facilities and social amenities is equally important for comprehensive community benefits,” Adega noted.
Matatu drivers serving the route expressed confidence that the transportation sector will flourish upon road completion, requesting streetlight installation to improve safety. Traders, represented by Carol Abila, anticipated increased revenue opportunities. “A dependable road will enable faster and cheaper goods transport, expanding our businesses and attracting additional customers,” Abila stated.
The Mamboleo Chemelil road serves as a crucial connection between Kisumu, Kericho, and Nandi counties. Once completed, it should facilitate smoother travel, lower transportation expenses, and foster regional economic development.
