National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has clarified that Orange Democratic Movement leader Oburu Oginga continues to execute his parliamentary obligations remotely from home while recuperating from a medical condition. Wetang’ula refuted claims that the Siaya Senator had abandoned his duties, emphasizing that he has maintained remote operations following his release from the medical facility. The National Assembly Speaker shared these updates on Wednesday after heading a parliamentary delegation, accompanied by Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, to visit Oburu at his Nairobi home. Senator Oburu Oginga has left the hospital and is healing at his residence, fulfilling his legislative functions remotely, Wetang’ula noted. Oburu left the medical facility on October 19 following an admission that began on October 2, after which he remained at his Nairobi property, stepping back from routine political and legislative events. In an official statement after the delegation’s visit, Wetang’ula mentioned that the team felt heartened by the ODM leader’s health progress and offered wishes for a complete and fast recovery. We were delighted and encouraged by his notable recovery since leaving the hospital, extending our prayers for his sustained progress and full restoration of health, he stated. Wetang’ula further noted that Oburu retained his trademark wit during the encounter, amusing the visiting lawmakers with lighthearted remarks despite his recent medical hurdles. True to his cheerful disposition, Hon. Oburu kept us amused with his typical jokes and lightheartedness, expressing certainty about returning to full service soon while conceding that the sickness had temporarily curtailed his political momentum, Wetang’ula remarked. The National Assembly Speaker stated that he advised Oburu to place his well-being above all else and take adequate time for recuperation prior to resuming intensive political activities. He further commended the lawmaker for his fortitude, endurance, and optimistic outlook throughout the health ordeal. I urged him to prioritize his wellness and dedicate sufficient time to heal completely prior to re-engaging in political platforms, Wetang’ula remarked. The delegation included representatives from both legislative chambers, with Wetang’ula expressing gratitude to the MPs who joined him and Kingi in expressing solidarity with the ODM figurehead. He characterized Oburu as a vital asset within Parliament and a significant personality in the political sphere of the nation. Oburu’s absence from public political gatherings has drawn notice, especially as ODM navigates internal leadership dynamics and wider political realignments leading up to the 2027 General Election. His anticipated resumption of active responsibilities will receive close attention as his recovery proceeds and he guides the party forward.
