Murkomen Calls for Peaceful Land Resolution, Crackdown on Illegal Firearms in Narok
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has urged residents of Narok County to resolve ongoing land disputes peacefully, warning that clashes over property rights are fueling violence and even injuring security personnel. Speaking ahead of a Jukwaa la Usalama town hall meeting, Murkomen said the escalating value of land in Narok has intensified tensions, especially over a contested 6,500-acre parcel in Ang’ata Barikoi, Kilgoris, claimed by both Maasai and Kipsigis communities.
Murkomen noted that many of these land conflicts have deep historical roots, and while legal processes and community dialogues continue, residents must avoid taking matters into their own hands.
He emphasised that security teams are facilitating mediation through barazas—traditional community meetings—to rebuild trust and find long-term solutions.
The CS also appealed to political leaders to refrain from exploiting land disputes for personal gain, warning that doing so could undermine regional stability.
On the security front, Murkomen expressed alarm over the proliferation of illegal firearms in Narok, especially given their role in fueling inter-community conflict.
He revealed that ammunition is being trafficked into the county from as far as West Pokot, Uganda, and Tanzania.
The CS gave authorities one week to arrest and prosecute those involved, and offered a voluntary surrender window for illegal gun owners to turn in their weapons before a crackdown.
Murkomen underscored that stabilising Narok requires both justice and reconciliation. We are not just responding to conflict, he said. We are actively working to bring communities together to talk, to listen, and to find solutions that protect everyone’s rights.
The Interior Ministry affirmed its commitment to supporting peace‑building efforts and boosting multi‑agency security interventions to curb land-related violence and illegal arms in the county.
