The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) apprehended the DCIO of Kitutu Central Sub-County, Chief Inspector Nicholas Waringa, and Corporal Lovy Ochieng Ouya from Nyanchwa Police Station, on charges of demanding and accepting a bribe from a civilian.
The law enforcement action was prompted by a report indicating that the officers requested KSh.100,000 to help arrest a person suspected of unlawfully occupying a plot in Nyanchwa Estate, Kisii County, and constructing buildings on it.
After a thorough investigation by EACC officials, the two officers were taken into custody following the receipt of an initial payment of KSh.40,000 from the reporting party.
The accused individuals were transported to the EACC Kisii Regional Office for administrative procedures before being granted bail of KSh.50,000 each, pending the conclusion of the inquiry.
This incident occurred shortly after the apprehension of a Kenya Power worker and an associate on accusations of requesting and accepting a bribe to restore electricity service to a home.
The action was initiated by a complaint submitted to the Commission on Thursday, May 28th, by a resident who had experienced a power disconnection two days prior. Evidence gathered revealed that the suspect, Gerald Nyaoke, a technician from the Kenya Power Donholm Office, had sought KSh.30,000 from the complainant to reinstate electricity supply.
In response to the complaint, EACC investigators conducted a surveillance operation that tracked and recorded communications between the informant and the suspects, leading to the detention following the purported bribe transaction.
The suspects were taken to the Integrity Centre for additional administrative actions and investigation.
