Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has committed to providing VIP hearses and coffins at no cost to the families of students who perished in the devastating dormitory fire at Utumishi Girls Academy.

The pledge came during Sonko’s visit to the Gilgil-based institution to extend condolences to grieving families and evaluate the circumstances after the blaze resulted in the loss of 16 students.

He was joined by Gilgil Member of Parliament Martha Wangari.

Addressing reporters near the school premises, Sonko stated that his foundation and associates were prepared to assist bereaved families and guarantee that the deceased students receive respectful burials.

“We are also prepared to extend our assistance to the grieving families by offering VIP hearses and coffins without charge, along with any additional support required to ensure the departed students receive a honorable farewell,” he stated.

“We aim to guarantee that the deceased girls receive a respectful send-off.”

Nevertheless, Sonko indicated that his team would initially permit the government to fulfill its obligations before intervening where support might be necessary.

“We will allow the government to perform its role first, but we stand ready should any gaps requiring assistance emerge,” he mentioned.

The former governor observed that the tragedy was an unforeseen event that had left numerous families devastated and requiring help.

He mentioned he was willing to offer any necessary support to alleviate the difficulties facing affected families.

“For parents unable to transport their loved ones’ remains, we will assist them to any location within the country,” Sonko explained.

He additionally urged the government to enhance safety protocols in educational establishments to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

“We must establish appropriate measures to ensure such incidents do not repeat. The protection of our children in schools must remain a priority,” he emphasized.

Prior to traveling to Gilgil, Sonko mentioned he had visited Nakuru General Hospital with the intention of checking on students injured in the fire.

“Regrettably, I was informed that all the injured students had been moved to Kenyatta Hospital in Nairobi,” he said.

“I will now return to Nairobi to visit them, observe their treatment progress, and stand alongside their families during this distressing time,” he stated.

Sonko conveyed condolences to the affected families, students and teachers, stating that the nation must unite during this challenging period.

“My prayers continue with all the affected students, parents and teachers. May God provide swift recovery to the injured and solace to the grieving families,” he expressed.

His comments arrived as investigations into the fire’s cause persisted, with forensic specialists and detectives working to identify victims and determine the circumstances of the tragedy.
