Wajir County will create history on Monday by hosting Madaraka Day celebrations for the first time since independence, a move the government emphasizes as proof of its dedication to inclusion, national unity and balanced development. At Harambee Annex in Nairobi prior to the 63rd Madaraka Day festivities, Government Spokesman Isaac Mwaura stated that bringing the national event to Wajir represents a calculated strategy to ensure all regions of the nation feel part of Kenya’s development path. Mwaura characterized the celebrations as a landmark achievement for the North Eastern region, which has traditionally been peripheral to significant national gatherings. “Kenya’s North Eastern region is making history as Wajir County gets ready to host the nation’s 63rd Madaraka Day festivities for the very first time since independence,” he remarked. He pointed out that despite worldwide economic difficulties, including disruptions tied to the continuing Middle East conflict, Kenya’s economy has stayed resilient, allowing the administration to persist with investing in development schemes and initiatives designed to fortify national unity. The spokesperson noted that this year’s celebrations transcend the usual national ceremony and instead represent a fresh pledge to the principles that motivated Kenya’s quest for self-governance. According to the administration, holding the festivities in Wajir illustrates that no area should be left out due to its geographic position or historical neglect. The county administrative center has received extensive improvements in anticipation of the national occasion, with infrastructure initiatives modernizing the town. Among the principal improvements is a newly built arena with seating for over 10,000 spectators, which will accommodate the main festivities. Roads connecting the arena to residential neighborhoods, government buildings and other amenities have been improved to bitumen standards, while contemporary street illumination has been fitted to boost safety and encourage economic activities. The administration has also finished a small State House and related amenities, which should improve the area’s capability to host future national events. Mwaura stated that the festivities present a chance to display the broader development plan now advancing in Wajir, Garissa and Mandera counties. He disclosed that almost 30 major undertakings are being carried out in the three counties, including seven modern marketplaces intended to support commerce, livestock enterprises and cross-border trade. In Garissa County, six student hubs are being constructed to supply educational settings and guidance initiatives, while five contemporary libraries are being established to broaden access to educational and digital educational materials. The administration also featured progress under the Affordable Housing Initiative, with five ventures projected to supply 2,148 residences across the area. Mwaura mentioned that the housing projects are generating job prospects for youth while invigorating local economies.
