ODM leader Oburu Oginga has defended the party’s decision to cooperate with President William Ruto’s administration, asserting that the arrangement is intentional and supported by negotiations leading up to the 2027 General Election.
Addressing a virtual gathering at the Jacaranda Grounds in Nairobi on Saturday during the conclusion of the Mwezi wa Baba events, Oburu stated that ODM entered the broad-based government with precise goals and frameworks defining its partnership with the ruling coalition.
He emphasized that the party was not participating without direction and noted that Raila and the party leadership engaged consciously with a full understanding of their actions.
Oburu clarified that this broad-based arrangement should be distinguished from a formal coalition, pointing out that both political structures function under different rules and necessitate separate negotiation strategies.
He explained that a broad-based government operates distinctly from a coalition administration, noting that ODM is negotiating strictly within the boundaries of national laws and regulations.
The ODM official revealed that the party has selected five individuals for a technical committee tasked with addressing constitutional and policy matters tied to the arrangement.
He mentioned that a distinct coalition committee, featuring representatives from both ODM and the presidential faction, will be formed prior to February of the following year.
Oburu confirmed that this upcoming coalition committee would be jointly named by his faction and the President’s side immediately following the initial steps.
These comments arrive amid ongoing discussions inside ODM concerning its ties to the current administration and its strategic path toward the 2027 elections.
Furthermore, he cautioned members against voicing opinions that run contrary to established party positions, urging adherence and discipline as ODM gears up for upcoming electoral contests.
He advised members to refrain from opposing party policy when sharing personal opinions, stressing the need for disciplined alignment with party guidelines ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The gathering concluded month-long commemorations dedicated to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, whom Oburu praised as a pivotal national figure and the cornerstone of ODM.
He highlighted that the party held a distinct purpose in honoring Raila for his guidance and foundational contributions to the movement’s establishment and expansion.
Oburu noted that Raila’s political journey stemmed from deep conviction and resistance against tyranny rather than merely his familial lineage.
Additionally, the ODM leader expressed gratitude to citizens who extended well wishes during his recovery from a recent illness, expressing optimism about returning to the political arena shortly.
He described his political organization as one of the largest movements across the region, highlighting ODM’s enduring political influence as preparations for the upcoming polls continue.
He encouraged followers to maintain their pursuit of liberty and progress, affirming that the party will navigate the 2027 polls through its formal frameworks and established policies.
