Church services and businesses in Kamburu ward, Lari constituency of Kiambu county were disrupted by protests on Sunday as residents demonstrated against increasing insecurity.
Banner-waving residents sang and blew whistles, demanding enhanced government security measures amid numerous incidents including livestock theft, avocado and banana theft, house break-ins, and other crimes.
Local resident Susan Wanja expressed particular anger over last week’s double murder of community members.
“We will not rest as we live in fear of criminal gangs who could attack us at any time. They used to steal, but last week they killed two people,” she stated.
Protesters blocked the main road, entered Kamburu trading center, and marched to the local police station seeking answers.
Despite their demands, the demonstration remained peaceful with no property damage or injuries reported.
“We did not destroy anything. We want to remain peaceful. Our goal is to make the government aware of our suffering,” said resident James Mwangi.
Mwangi announced they would continue weekly protests until security improves and criminals are deterred.
Area chief Francis Waronja’s attempts to prevent protesters from entering the police post were unsuccessful.
Lari deputy county commissioner Samuel Kariuki joined the chief, urging residents to remain peaceful while investigations into recent thefts and murders continued.
Kariuki affirmed the government’s commitment to creating an environment where people can live and conduct business safely.
“These cases are under investigation. We will follow up and ensure prompt action is taken,” the administrator stated.
Former banker and MP aspirant Josephine Miano condemned the escalating insecurity in the region.
Miano warned that if these issues are not properly addressed, local residents will face increased poverty.
“When dairy cows that provide income through milk sales are stolen, how can farmers earn? The same applies to poultry farmers as well as avocado and banana growers,” she questioned.
“These farmers will lose motivation and stop working hard to produce for sale, leaving locals impoverished, which is deeply unfortunate,” she added.
The aspirant offered condolences to the families of murder victims, urging the government to expedite investigations.
