The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has officially implemented the advanced automated traffic enforcement system, employing numerous smart surveillance cameras throughout Nairobi to detect speeding violations and deliver instant digital penalties to drivers. Motorists navigating major thoroughfares in Nairobi have been warned as speed limits are now enforced across key highways, bypasses, and urban corridors monitored by traffic surveillance cameras. A spot check revealed that most drivers exceeding the speed limits are already receiving traffic penalties. “Violation of section 42(1) and 43(1) (Name withheld), your Vehicle Reg (registration withheld) was captured speeding on Redhill link Road at 2026-06-04 16:44:09,” stated one of the messages reviewed by this publication. With traffic fines now delivered directly to motorists via SMS, authorities are relying on technology to reduce reckless driving and decrease fatal road accidents in Nairobi. According to NTSA, the system removes the requirement for police officers to manually issue traffic tickets, replacing it with automated enforcement. The authority has installed an extensive surveillance camera network along the busy Thika Superhighway, with varying speed limits based on location. Drivers are permitted to travel at up to 110km/h in areas such as Jomoko Turnoff, Allsops, and the Pangani Interchange. However, speed limits decrease to 50km/h in urban residential areas and further to 30km/h in designated school zones. When a vehicle surpasses the established speed limit, the smart cameras automatically capture high-resolution images of the license plate and immediately send a penalty notification to the registered owner’s mobile phone. The system’s nationwide implementation had previously been suspended by the High Court due to concerns about algorithmic decision-making and constitutional protections. However, after recent legal approvals, NTSA has proceeded with full-scale implementation. Motorists disregarding the digital notices may face significant consequences, including accumulating penalties and difficulties accessing crucial government services related to vehicle compliance.
