Chaos erupted Tuesday, May 12, 2026, when the body of a 37-year-old man secretly buried the previous night in Kamunono village, Kisasi sub-location, Vihiga County, was exhumed in a startling development.
According to Shamakhohkho Location Chief Hesbon Liyenzero, the deceased was discovered dead in his room on May 2nd under suspicious circumstances, with allegations suggesting he might have died from injuries sustained during an attack.
Authorities had appealed to anyone with information about the suspicious death to come forward, but no one responded.
On Monday, the family reportedly retrieved the body from Jumuia Hospital Mortuary in Kaimosi and conducted a night burial.
This clandestine interment raised concerns among local residents, who eventually compelled those responsible to exhume the body. The community is requesting a post-mortem examination to determine the actual cause of death.
The situation escalated into violence when those who arranged the burial were attacked and injured by an angry mob.
The incident resulted in a major standoff, prompting police officers to deploy teargas to disperse the unruly crowd and restore calm.
The body has since been transported and is now preserved at Vihiga County Referral Hospital Mortuary pending further investigation.
