Mtwapa Police Station officers in Kilifi County detained a suspected habitual criminal and recovered substantial quantities of items suspected to be stolen during an intelligence-driven operation that has renewed apprehensions about trafficking of stolen merchandise along the coastal region.
The individual, identified as Pius Muthama Joseph, aged 38, was apprehended on Monday following information provided to Kilifi South Sub-County officers during a routine patrol of Mtwapa Township by a community member.
Sub-County Police Commander Hassan Kochale stated that officers initially examined the suspect’s water refilling establishment before moving to his home, where they discovered numerous items reportedly unrelated to the commercial operation.
“When my personnel arrived at his establishment, they discovered items with no apparent connection to a water refilling enterprise,” Kochale explained.
Recovered items included twenty gas cylinders from various manufacturers, four television sets, one laptop, twenty-six predominantly Samsung mobile phones, multiple tablets, three fans, two audio systems, an amplifier, a welding machine, a grinder, a heat gun, and various gas-related equipment.
Authorities indicated that the mobile devices and tablets had been secured in a safe which the suspect asserted he was unable to open or access. Law enforcement personnel subsequently forced open the safe in the suspect’s presence and retrieved the electronic items.
Additional recovered possessions comprised four wristwatches, four rings, eight silver chains, a machete, a knife, six remote controls, four extension cables, various garments, and twenty-four SIM cards from Safaricom and Airtel networks.
The importance of the seizure became apparent when a resident visited the station while officers were documenting the evidence and recognized one of the recovered gas cylinders as his stolen possession.
According to law enforcement accounts, the resident reported that the cylinder was stolen after he had left his residence for less than five minutes.
Kochale voiced concern regarding what he characterized as an expanding network of scrap metal traders and informal pawnbrokers purportedly enabling the distribution of stolen merchandise along the coastal area.
“Individuals bring their possessions to these establishments and receive payment in return. The purchasers are unaware of the nature of the items they are acquiring,” he stated.
The police commander additionally disclosed that the suspect had previously been detained on comparable charges with an ongoing court case, and that the individual was currently released on bail.
“I implore the judicial system to implement robust and decisive measures against this individual. Such activities cannot be permitted to continue,” Kochale emphasized.
Law enforcement has requested that community members who might recognize any of the recovered items come forward to Mtwapa Police Station to aid in identification and investigative processes.
The suspect continues to be held in detention pending formal charges, with all recovered materials maintained as case evidence.
