Narok Business Community Sounds Alarm Over Insecurity’s Toll on Economy
The business community in Narok County has issued a stark warning, stating that the escalating insecurity in the region is severely crippling trade and economic activity. In a meeting with local security officials, business leaders highlighted a surge in incidents ranging from highway muggings and livestock theft to violent attacks on traders, creating an environment of fear that is driving away customers and investors. They argue that the persistent unrest is not just a security matter but a direct threat to the economic survival of the region.
Traders from key sectors, including transport, hospitality, and agriculture, detailed the tangible impacts of the crisis. Lorry drivers and matatu operators reported avoiding certain routes, particularly at night, due to the high risk of attacks and road blockades by protesters. Hotel owners cited a dramatic drop in bookings as tourists and business travelers steer clear of the area. Perhaps most critically, farmers and livestock traders expressed fear of transporting their goods to market, disrupting the supply chain and causing significant financial losses. When our produce cannot reach the market, and our customers are too afraid to come to our shops, we are essentially out of business, stated a representative from the Narok Traders Association.
The business leaders presented their concerns to a security team led by Narok County Commissioner Kipkech Lotiatia, urging immediate and decisive action. They called for increased police patrols along major highways and trading centers, a more robust and sustained security operation to flush out criminal elements, and a faster response to distress calls. The merchants emphasized that restoring security is the fundamental first step to reviving the local economy and protecting livelihoods.
In response, Commissioner Lotiatia acknowledged the legitimacy of the concerns and assured the business community of the government’s commitment to restoring order. He outlined ongoing security measures, including planned operations to disarm civilians and increased deployment to hotspot areas. The outcome of this dialogue is being closely watched, as the ability of security forces to create a stable environment is now directly linked to the economic fortunes of Narok County. The situation underscores that without lasting peace, the prospects for trade, investment, and prosperity in the region remain deeply uncertain.
