ODM Prepares High-Stakes Nairobi Rally to Assert Dominance

ODM will stage a major political demonstration in Nairobi on Saturday, coming closely on the heels of a massive gathering organized in the capital by Senator Edwin Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi faction. The Orange party selected Jacaranda Grounds, the exact location where Sifuna and his allies recently showcased their influence, establishing the groundwork for a fierce contest over the city’s vital electorate. Attention remains fixed on whether the party can successfully draw crowds large enough to fill the venue, situated within Babu Owino’s Embakasi East constituency. Langata MP Phelix Odiwuor confirmed following a venue inspection that preparations are fully complete for the assembly. The upcoming event is widely perceived as an effort by senior ODM leaders to reclaim authority in a municipality where Sifuna’s rising political weight challenges the party’s historical supremacy. As the 2027 elections draw closer, this showdown may provide an early glimpse into who commands the allegiance of Nairobi voters following the passing of Raila Odinga last year. ODM has ramped up outreach efforts across the metropolis, setting up large billboards and dispatching grassroots operatives to build momentum. Party organizers have concentrated particularly on densely populated Eastlands neighborhoods, initiating door-to-door campaigns to rally attendees. Nonetheless, Nairobi ODM chairman George Aladwa rejected claims that the gathering was designed to counter Sifuna’s political momentum. The Makadara legislator maintained that the meeting forms part of a broader strategy to solidify the party’s foundation ahead of upcoming polls. Behind these official statements, however, lies an intense rivalry for control of Nairobi, a territory that has anchored ODM’s electoral success for nearly two decades. Sifuna’s expanding footprint, combined with his political ties to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, appears to complicate the Orange party’s strategic outlook. Political analyst Martin Andati cautioned that ODM faces significant hurdles in maintaining its supremacy in the absence of Raila, whose individual popularity cut across ethnic and party lines. Andati suggested that Sifuna, Gachagua, and Kalonzo stand to gain the most from this shifting political terrain. ODM’s difficulties have intensified due to its deepening political alignment with President William Ruto’s UDA administration, a move that has disaffected segments of its core supporters. The dissolution of the Azimio coalition has further added to these complications. Former partners such as Wiper, Jubilee, and DAP-Kenya are increasingly aligning with the opposition faction linked to Gachagua. In the 2022 elections, Raila carried the capital by securing 767,395 votes compared to Ruto’s 561,775. Furthermore, ODM secured eight out of Nairobi’s 17 parliamentary seats, alongside the positions of Senator and Woman Representative. Former Azimio allies claimed an additional four constituencies, leaving Ruto’s ruling UDA party with four parliamentary seats and the gubernatorial post. Yet those electoral dynamics could shift significantly by 2027. ODM national chairperson Gladys Wanga maintained that the party retains sufficient strength to protect its turf. Conversely, the death of Raila and subsequent fractures within ODM and the wider Azimio coalition continue to pose risks to the party’s future prospects. Sifuna has departed alongside Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, who is currently eyeing the Nairobi governorship, adding further complexity to ODM’s electoral blueprint.
