The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has officially launched a sophisticated automated traffic enforcement system, employing numerous intelligent surveillance cameras throughout Nairobi to detect speeding violations and dispatch immediate digital penalties to drivers.
Drivers utilizing major thoroughfares in Nairobi have been formally warned as speed limit enforcement extends across critical highways, bypasses, and urban corridors monitored by traffic surveillance equipment.
A recent inspection revealed that a significant portion of drivers exceeding speed thresholds have begun receiving automated traffic citations.
“Contravention of section 42(1) and 43(1) (Name withheld), your Vehicle Reg (registration withheld) was recorded speeding on Redhill link Road at 2026-06-04 16:44:09,” stated one of the notifications reviewed by this publication.
With traffic penalties now delivered directly to drivers via SMS, authorities are leveraging technological solutions to deter hazardous driving behaviors and decrease the incidence of fatal road incidents in Nairobi.
According to NTSA, the system eliminates the requirement for police officers to manually issue traffic citations, replacing this process with automated enforcement mechanisms.
The authority has established an extensive surveillance infrastructure along the busy Thika Superhighway, where speed restrictions vary according to specific locations.
Motorists are permitted to travel at speeds reaching 110km/h in sections including Jomoko Turnoff, Allsops, and the Pangani Interchange.
However, speed limitations decrease to 50km/h in residential urban zones and further reduce to 30km/h within designated school areas.
When a vehicle surpasses established speed parameters, the intelligent cameras automatically capture high-resolution images of the registration plate and immediately transmit a penalty notification to the registered owner’s mobile device.
The nationwide implementation of the system had previously been suspended by the High Court due to concerns regarding algorithmic determinations and constitutional protections.
Nevertheless, subsequent to recent judicial approvals, NTSA has proceeded with full-scale deployment.
Motorists disregarding the electronic notifications may encounter substantial repercussions, including penalty accumulation and difficulties accessing essential government services connected to vehicle compliance requirements.
