KWS Intensifies Anti-Bushmeat Campaign Across Four Counties

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has stepped up efforts to combat bushmeat consumption and illegal wildlife trading in regions of eastern and coastal Kenya. The wildlife agency cautioned communities about the health, environmental, and economic risks associated with this practice. Through the #SayNoToBushMeat campaign initiative, KWS announced that its personnel had conducted a public awareness campaign spanning Kitui, Kajiado, Machakos, and Taita Taveta counties, engaging with residents in Mutha, Kasala, Kanziku, Kisasi, Voo, Ikanga, and Ikutha. ‘Our teams have visited areas such as Mutha, Kasala, Kanziku, Kisasi, Voo, Ikanga, and Ikutha to inform communities about the risks of bushmeat consumption and how illegal wildlife activities negatively affect conservation, public health, and livelihoods,’ the agency stated. According to the wildlife agency, the campaign prioritized safeguarding species including dik-diks, giraffes, elands, and zebras, highlighting their crucial role in maintaining balanced ecosystems. KWS explained that dik-diks and elands assist in vegetation control and seed dispersal, while giraffes contribute to acacia woodland regeneration through selective browsing. Additionally, zebras maintain healthy grasslands through grazing and making room for new plant growth that supports other wildlife species. The agency also warned residents about the health dangers of handling and consuming bushmeat, noting that this practice exposes communities to zoonotic diseases that can transmit from animals to humans. ‘Furthermore, the Service is highlighting the importance of wildlife conservation to Kenya’s tourism sector, which generates employment, supports community businesses, contributes to national revenue, and promotes local development,’ KWS stated. The wildlife agency called on the public to report any illegal wildlife activities and endorse conservation initiatives that foster sustainable coexistence between humans and wildlife.
