The Kenyan government has officially declared Wednesday, May 27 as a public holiday.
According to a gazette notice released on Monday, May 25, the day will be observed to celebrate the Islamic festival of Eid-ul-Adha.
“The Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration has declared Wednesday, May 27, 2026, as a public holiday to mark Eid-ul-Adha, in accordance with the Public Holidays Act,” the official document stated.
Eid-ul-Adha, also referred to as the Festival of Sacrifice, represents one of the most significant observances for Muslims globally, with the other being Eid-ul-Fitr which concludes the Ramadan fasting period.
This important religious event occurs on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah, the final month in the Islamic lunar calendar, following the conclusion of the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Festivities typically span two to four days depending on regional customs.
The timing of Eid-ul-Adha depends on lunar sightings, which causes date variations across different nations, leading governments to announce the holiday based on moon observations rather than fixed calendar dates.
The festival honors Prophet Ibrahim’s unwavering faith and his readiness to sacrifice his son Ismail as commanded by Allah. Islamic tradition recounts how Allah intervened at the critical moment, substituting a ram for Ismail to be sacrificed.
Muslims worldwide observe this occasion through collective prayers, charitable contributions, and the performance of Qurbani (sacrificial offering).
The sacrificial ritual takes place following morning prayers held collectively at mosques on the day of Eid.
Permissible sacrificial animals include sheep, goats, cattle, or camels, which must meet health requirements and age specifications, and be slaughtered following halal procedures.
Kenyans anticipate upcoming public holidays as opportunities for brief respite from work schedules, with Madaraka Day scheduled for June 1, just one week away.
Construction progress on Wajir Stadium in Wajir County, chosen as the celebration venue, has been reported according to a May 21 update from Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo.
