The Retirement Benefits Authority (RBA) has joined forces with the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) to introduce a new funding initiative supporting journalists covering retirement savings and pension topics.
Revealed this week, the program offers financial assistance of up to KShs 10,000 to MCK-certified journalists and media professionals, with the goal of encouraging comprehensive, solution-oriented reporting on this frequently overlooked sector in Kenyan media.
Application submissions will be accepted through May 15, 2026, requiring participants to submit a brief synopsis not exceeding 150 words.
Recipients must ensure their stories are published or aired by June 19, 2026.
The initiative welcomes exploration of subjects including compound interest in long-term investments, creative pension approaches for informal workers, accessing dormant funds in unclaimed assets, healthcare provisions after retirement, and how pensions contribute to economic advancement.
During the announcement, officials emphasized the value of people-centered storytelling.
“Beyond numbers, we need to share the personal experiences of retirees facing challenges, finding innovative solutions, and achieving financial security,” the statement highlighted, showing the program’s focus on combining factual information with real-life accounts.
By covering costs such as transportation, communication, and dining, the funding enables journalists to visit regions where pension difficulties are most pronounced.
The project also aims to showcase reforms, opportunities, and the effects of digital innovation in the pensions industry, while promoting financial awareness and encouraging better saving habits.
Application processes are accessible through the official MCK website, with questions directed to grants@mediacouncil.or.ke. Support locations in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nakuru will offer additional assistance.
Through this partnership, the RBA and MCK aspire to influence Kenya’s pension conversation not only through regulatory measures but also through compelling journalism that educates and enables citizens.
