Interior Ministry Identifies Rift Valley as Top Region in Illegal Alcohol Trade

The Ministry of Interior and National Administration has disclosed the regions with the highest prevalence of illegal alcohol sales and distribution in the nation.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, April 15, the ministry reported that a recent operation conducted by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) led to the confiscation of 2.8 million litres of illegal beverages throughout the country.

According to the ministry’s assessment, the Rift Valley, Nyanza and Western regions represented the largest proportion of seized illicit alcohol, rendering them the most impacted by the unlawful commerce.

Statistics from the ministry indicated that approximately 800,000 litres, 690,000 litres and 600,000 litres were confiscated and destroyed in Rift Valley, Nyanza and Western Kenya, respectively.

The Ministry noted thatfor the production and sale of counterfeit and unsafe alcoholic drinks.

Particularly, the counties of Kisii, Kakamega, Nakuru and West Pokot were identified as primary locations where enforcement authorities have documented substantial recoveries in recent operations.

“Analysis of the seizures demonstrates that the problem is focused in the Rift Valley, Nyanza, and Western regions, which constituted the greatest portion. Counties such as Kisii, Kakamega, Nakuru and West Pokot have developed as critical areas of concern,” the Interior Ministry stated.

In Nairobi County, officials confiscated and destroyed 309,000 litres of illegal alcohol, whereas Central, Coast and Eastern regions reported the smallest quantities of seized illicit alcohol.

Authorities attributed the comparatively lower amounts in Central and Coastal regions to continuous enforcement measures and enhanced adherence to licensing requirements.

“Central and Coastal regions, where sustained enforcement has been implemented, have registered comparatively smaller volumes, while the North Eastern region has reported minimal instances,” the Ministry mentioned.

During the announcement, the ministry clarified that the operation is a component of a wider governmental resolution designating drug and substance abuse as a national advancement and safety emergency.
