Theft of Medical Supplies Rocks Turkana County as Health Department Launches Investigations
Lodwar, Turkana County – June 27, 2025
Allegations of theft involving medical personnel have rattled Turkana County, prompting swift action from the county government.
A closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera at Lodwar County Referral Hospital on Monday captured a supply chain officer allegedly pilfering medical supplies, raising serious concerns about accountability in the county’s health system.
In response, County Health Executive Committee Member, Dr. Joseph Esekon, announced that investigations have been launched. Specialized audit teams have been deployed to subcounty health facilities to verify service delivery and scrutinize the management of medical supplies.
In accordance with the establishment accountability procedures, the matter has been formally referred to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations for a comprehensive inquiry. This will ascertain the full scope of misappropriation and ensure that all parties implicated are held accountable under the law, said Dr. Esekon.
The inspection aims to identify systemic vulnerabilities, prevent further losses of essential commodities, and strengthen transparency in the handling of high-priority health products and technologies.
Dr. Esekon reassured the public that the department remains committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity and stewardship in managing public health resources. He also urged residents to report any instances of drug pilferage from public health facilities.
Earlier, on May 21, Dr. Esekon flagged off a consignment of drugs worth Sh60 million destined for 229 health facilities across Turkana’s 11 subcounties. The drugs were expected to last three months, underscoring the importance of safeguarding medical supplies.
The county government will take firm action against anyone found misappropriating medical resources, he emphasized.
This initiative reflects the county’s continued efforts to improve healthcare delivery and protect vital medical resources from theft and misuse.
