Elgeyo Marakwet Intensifies Fight Against Illicit Brews
The Elgeyo Marakwet County security team has intensified its crackdown on illicit brews, destroying a massive consignment of illegal alcohol in the latest phase of its sustained war against the vice. The multi-agency operation, led by the National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) and the police, targeted brewing dens and distribution networks across the county, leading to the destruction of thousands of litres of chang’aa and busaa.
The County Commissioner stated that the fight against illicit alcohol is a top priority, linking the brews to a rise in domestic violence, mental health issues, and a loss of productivity among the youth. He warned that the security team will maintain constant surveillance and conduct regular raids to ensure the brewing cartels do not have an opportunity to regroup and resume their destructive trade. Several suspects were also arrested during the operations.
Local administrators have been directed to work closely with village elders to identify and report all individuals involved in the production and sale of the illicit liquor. The security team is also engaging in public barazas to sensitize the community on the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. The intensified war is part of a broader national effort to eradicate the vice and restore the social fabric of communities that have been severely impacted.
