CS Mugaa inspects Sh1 B irrigation canal project in Kirinyaga

Water and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Erick Mugaa has conducted a comprehensive inspection of the ongoing Sh1 billion irrigation canal project in Mutithi Ward, Mwea Subcounty, Kirinyaga County. The project, designed to irrigate 4,000 acres of farmland, is part of the government’s efforts to boost rice production and strengthen national food security. Accompanied by county officials, including Deputy Governor David Githanda and Mwea MP Mary Maingi, CS Mugaa emphasized that the project, handled by three contractors, is progressing well and is scheduled for completion by August 2026.

The initiative builds on the earlier success of the Thiba Dam, which allowed Mwea farmers to expand from two to three cropping seasons annually. Rice production in the county has surged from 94,400 metric tonnes to 160,000 metric tonnes, with the total irrigated area growing from 25,461 to 31,271 acres. CS Mugaa highlighted that Mwea is now Kenya’s largest rice-producing region, and the expansion is expected to transform the town into a 24-hour economic hub, with activities in milling, transport, and local markets operating continuously. He also referenced the National Irrigation Sector Investment Plan, which aims to enhance agricultural productivity by 35% nationwide.

Local leaders and stakeholders welcomed the development, urging quality and timely completion. Deputy Governor Githanda stressed adherence to project timelines, while MP Maingi reassured farmers that the Mwea Rice Mill remains fully owned by them, safeguarding against privatisation and protecting local incomes. Farmers, including Peter Chege, advocated for further water projects such as the Nyamindi Dam to expand irrigation in Mwea West, noting that additional water infrastructure could further boost production and livelihoods. The project underscores Kenya’s commitment to modernizing irrigation infrastructure, improving agricultural yields, and fostering sustainable rural economic growth.
