A 42-year-old man lost his life in a well drowning incident in Bungoma County as he attempted to retrieve a bucket reportedly trapped inside for multiple days.

The tragic event took place at Lumbokha Sub-location in Bumula Sub-county, according to police reports.

The deceased, identified as Edward Wanyama, had gone to the homestead on Wednesday with the specific purpose of removing the bucket from the well.

Western regional police commander George Seda stated that after Wanyama entered the well, he failed to emerge from it.

The situation remained unnoticed until later in the evening when a three-year-old child, the homeowner’s son, informed his father that the man had entered the well and had not returned.

The incident was reported to local authorities on Thursday, prompting a response from police officers and representatives from the Bungoma County Government.

A combined recovery operation was initiated, resulting in the retrieval of Wanyama’s body from the well. Police confirmed that the body showed no visible signs of injury and was positively identified by family members.

The location was documented and photographs were taken as part of the ongoing investigations. The body was transported to the Bungoma County Referral Hospital mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination to determine the precise cause of death.

Police have commenced investigations into the incident.

In a separate case, a 75-year-old man lost his life after being struck by a locomotive train in the Maji Mazuri area along the Eldoret–Nakuru railway line on Thursday afternoon.

Police reports indicate that the train operator sounded multiple warning signals, but the pedestrian did not move away from the railway tracks and was struck, suffering fatal injuries.

Police officers from Maji Mazuri Police Station responded to the scene and confirmed that the victim had died immediately.

The deceased was later identified by relatives as Joseph Moinera, a 75-year-old resident of the area.

Initial investigations revealed that Moinera had a mental health condition, a fact acknowledged by family members.

The body was taken to Eldama Ravine Sub-county Hospital Mortuary, pending a post-mortem examination. Police continue to investigate the fatal railway accident.
