The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed the arrest of comedian and activist Erick Omondi after speculation over his disappearance on Friday.

In a statement on Friday, June 5, DCI confirmed that its officers had arrested the activist at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) following what it described as credible intelligence linking him to criminal activities committed under the guise of demonstrations against increased fuel prices.

According to the investigative agency, detectives from DCI Central, working with officers from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) Nairobi Region, apprehended the activist and transported him to the Nairobi Region DCI Headquarters for processing.

“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirms the arrest of Erick Omondi today, 5th June 2026, at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA),” DCI stated.

“Following credible intelligence, detectives from DCI Central, working jointly with CRIB Nairobi Region, arrested the suspect in connection with offences committed under the guise of the recent fuel-related protests in Nairobi. He is currently recording his statement at the Nairobi Region DCI Headquarters as he is being processed for arraignment,” it added.

The clarification comes amid speculation over the comedian’s whereabouts after he disclosed that eight uniformed men had taken him into custody.

In a post shared on the comedian’s social media accounts hours earlier, he claimed to have been arrested by eight men and did not know where he was being taken.

“Just been arrested by a group of 8 non-uniformed men. I have no idea where we are headed!!!” Omondi wrote.

According to the detectives, Omondi’s arrest is part of an ongoing investigation into incidents linked to the fuel protests that rocked Nairobi days ago.

DCI further added that several other suspects connected to the same case had already been arrested and arraigned in court on May 18, 2026.

The detectives, however, did not immediately disclose the specific offences the activist is accused of committing, but maintained that investigations had established links between him and alleged criminal acts committed during the demonstrations.

DCI further reiterated that citizens have the right to picket and demonstrate peacefully, but warned that the freedoms must be exercised within the confines of the law.

“Any criminal acts committed under the guise of protests, demonstrations, or civic action will be investigated and dealt with firmly in accordance with the law,” the agency emphasised.
