Former Matungu MP David Were is grieving after his son, Hanington Were, was fatally attacked in Kisumu during the early hours.

The ex-lawmaker reported that Hanington had left his residence with a companion shortly after midnight on May 24, only to be ambushed by two individuals on a motorcycle approximately 1 a.m. He sustained fatal stab wounds during the assault.

Upon arriving at the medical facility around 8 p.m., I received word that my son had passed away. Medical personnel informed me he had sustained stab wounds to his back,” the former MP explained.

Additional eyewitness accounts confirm the incident occurred at Robert Owuko Estate in Kisumu, where the perpetrators on a motorcycle carried out the attack before fleeing the scene.

The news of his demise quickly spread, reaching family members by approximately 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, prompting numerous estate residents to gather at the location, visibly disturbed by the event in their community.

His remains were subsequently conveyed to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, where authorities confirmed investigations into the murder had begun, with law enforcement actively pursuing leads regarding the two individuals responsible.

The homicide has drawn renewed focus, as locals report that violent robberies have been increasingly prevalent over recent months, particularly during nighttime hours.

Following this sudden incident, Kisumu residents voiced concerns about escalating security issues in the region, attributing them to boda boda operators who are allegedly collaborating with criminal elements to facilitate such offenses.

The Kisumu community currently lacks adequate security protection. Numerous young boda boda riders have entered the profession, and they have completely compromised its integrity,” a local resident reported from the location.

Community members have identified inadequate street lighting as a significant factor enabling criminal activities. Regions extending from Robert Owuko Estate through Mountain View to Kore reportedly remain completely unlit during nighttime hours, providing concealment for wrongdoers.

Area residents are now urging both the Kisumu County Government and security authorities to promptly address the circumstances, cautioning that numerous innocent lives continue to be endangered unless action is taken immediately.

David Were represented Matungu as a Member of Parliament from 2002 to 2017, securing election on Narc and New Ford Kenya party tickets during various electoral periods.

He is now demanding a swift investigation into his son’s untimely demise, urging all available investigative resources to be mobilized.
