David Were, former Member of Parliament for Matungu, experienced the death of his son during a nighttime incident on Saturday, May 23, 2026.
The occurrence was documented at Obunga police station on Sunday following the death of Hannington Were, who was 39 years old.
According to a witness, Hannington was with a companion when they were assaulted as they walked toward Mamba Hotel to purchase food along Nyerere Road.
The father mentioned that both individuals were transported to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH). Unfortunately, Hannington had already passed away.
He explained that they chose to walk as no motorcycle taxis were available. Upon reaching Makini School, they were confronted by motorcycle taxi operators. Medical staff confirmed Hannington was deceased upon arrival at the hospital, having been stabbed twice in the back.
Additionally, he had suffered a blow to the head from a metal rod.
The father described his son, who worked as a compliance officer at the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), as having no conflicts with colleagues or in the community, and being a non-controversial person.
As per the prominent politician, Hannington’s wife was unaware of his departure since her husband never walked at night nor consumed alcohol.
He shared that his wife was already asleep and unaware of Hannington’s absence. Describing his son as a very private individual who rarely walked at night, he expressed uncertainty about what motivated the outing, while calling on authorities to enhance security in Kisumu due to increasing attack incidents.
Hannington’s companion is currently battling for survival at JOOTRH following serious injuries as well.
Law enforcement officials examined the location and the hospital, confirming that investigations are underway to identify the perpetrators.
It remains uncertain whether the assailants took any belongings from the victims.
In a separate incident, a security guard is receiving medical care after sustaining serious injuries during a theft at a fish supplies establishment in the Obunga neighborhood.
The theft took place at Migingo Fish Supplies Shop near the former Toyota Kenya location.
Police personnel responded quickly to the scene and determined that the thieves had scaled the locked main gate prior to attacking the security guard.
The perpetrators reportedly struck the guard on the head with an iron rod, causing significant injuries.
The injured individual was transported to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for ongoing treatment.
Following the assault, the intruders forced entry into the office and made off with various items, including two television sets, a CCTV monitor, two electric kettles, a pair of shoes, a non-functional mobile phone, and KSh2,000 in cash.
Authorities believe the robbery might have been carried out by former staff members who had previously worked at the establishment but departed after a dispute.
Police indicated that the crime scene was secured for continued investigation, with an update expected as detectives track down those responsible.
