Violence broke out in Busia town Tuesday night when two young people died during clashes between authorities and a youth group identifying as “Jobless.” Residents from Marachi estate on the outskirts of Busia participated in protests demanding the release of youth leader Edwin Wepukhulu, who was detained on allegations of damaging a police vehicle at the Korinda roadblock. Eyewitnesses reported that the two young people were killed by police gunfire, while three others injured are currently receiving medical care at a local hospital in Busia Town. The situation remained volatile in Busia as demonstrators carried one of the deceased through the streets following the fatal encounter. Protesters denounced what they described as excessive force by police, asserting that the two victims were shot from behind while attempting to flee after police deployed tear gas. They demanded accountability for those involved in the deaths.
