The National Police Service (NPS) has issued a warning about potential flooding in more than 10 Nairobi estates as heavy rainfall continues to disrupt activities across the nation.
According to an April 29 statement, NPS remains on high alert alongside other government agencies following persistent rainfall that has quickly elevated water levels in crucial waterways.
Within Nairobi, the situation is compounded by rapidly increasing water levels in major rivers, including the Nairobi, Mathare, Ngong, Kamiti, and Athi rivers. These waterways all feed into the larger Athi River system, which is currently at dangerously high levels,” NPS reported.
Multiple neighborhoods near the identified rivers face heightened flooding risks, with residents advised to exercise extreme caution.
Areas vulnerable to flooding along the Nairobi River include Kileleshwa, Lang’ata, Ngara, Madaraka, Eastleigh, and Kawangware estates.
Southern parts of the city like Kibera and South C, located along the Ngong River, also face significant flood threats.
Furthermore, rising water levels in both the Kamiti and Athi rivers are anticipated to impact the Kasarani area, while Mathare will likely be affected by its namesake river.
Additional areas at risk include Tatu City, Ruiru, Kitengela, Mlolongo, and Syokimau, situated near the Athi River.
Sections of the Central Business District (CBD), Gikomba, Globe, and the Industrial Area are also experiencing flooding hazards as portions of the Nairobi River flow through them. Kilimani, Westlands, Mukuru Kwa Reuben, and Korogocho are among other affected locales.
Residents in flood-prone zones should relocate to elevated ground when instructed and comply promptly.
NPS has cautioned the public to exercise maximum care when traveling due to water-saturated roads and limited visibility.
Citizens are warned against walking or driving through flowing water, as even shallow currents possess sufficient strength to cause harm or property damage.
