Kenya’s Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has promised to address the increasing incidents of gangsterism and firearm violence affecting political gatherings, noting that security forces have already pinpointed those orchestrating the disturbances.

During his testimony before the Senate Standing Committee on National Security on Thursday, Kanja stated that law enforcement had conducted inquiries and identified the financial networks organizing violent elements deployed to interfere with public gatherings.

Regarding the matters of gangsters and firearms, Mr. Chair and esteemed Members, I assure you this problem will cease,” Kanja declared. “It will end as we have thoroughly examined these criminal elements. I cannot disclose specific details here as that falls within my operational duties. We have completed our investigations and traced their origins, funding sources, operational methods, and local organizers.

The National Police Service is treating this matter with utmost seriousness and will ensure all perpetrators face legal consequences.

I want to reassure you, Mr. Chair and Members, this problem of gangsterism and illegal weapons will be resolved. We are committed to this course of action,” he emphasized.

Kanja’s remarks come as political tensions escalate in anticipation of the Linda Mwananchi rally set for Sunday, April 26, in Kisumu, where figures aligned with a splinter Orange Democratic Movement faction are planning a significant political event.

He guaranteed organizers and participants of comprehensive protection, stating that law enforcement would secure all attendees provided the event organizers adhered to legal requirements.

Regarding the Kisumu gathering, I will ensure it receives full security coverage. However, I equally urge organizers to comply with legal regulations,” he stated.

Kanja mentioned that Article 37 of the Constitution protects the right to peaceful assembly, yet organizers bear responsibility for maintaining order during such occasions.

Organizers themselves must ensure peaceful conditions. Therefore, by working collaboratively, all will proceed smoothly. From my position, I can assure you that your event will be safe and secure. Anyone wishing to attend is welcome to do so,” he confirmed.

The Sunday rally is anticipated to bring together prominent figures such as Siaya Governor James Orengo, ODM secretary general Edwin Sifuna, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, and Suba South MP Caroli Omondi.

This gathering occurs amid increasing fragmentation within ODM, as competing factions vie for control in the Luo Nyanza political sphere.

Kisumu has historically served as a stronghold for ODM and the late opposition leader Raila Odinga, rendering Sunday’s rally of considerable political importance.

Kanja also denounced the recent assault on Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, an important supporter of the Linda Mwananchi movement, stating that all implicated individuals would be held accountable.

The incident involving Senator Osotsi was unacceptable. I want to reassure him and the Kenyan public that ultimately, all who committed offenses in this matter will face legal proceedings,” he declared.

These assurances arrive as authorities work to reduce tensions and uphold constitutional rights to peaceful assembly and political engagement nationwide.
