Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi was assaulted on Wednesday by armed individuals in Kisumu, described by his office as a targeted and premeditated attack.

According to a statement from the Vihiga Senate Office, the senator stopped in the Acacia area for personal grooming before heading to a Java Restaurant, where he met a friend and engaged with members of the public for approximately 30 minutes.

During this period, a group of armed men confronted him, questioning his political stance before physically assaulting him, according to a statement by Derrick Luvega, Director of Communication at Osotsi’s office.

The attackers reportedly demanded an explanation for his support of a one-term position rather than a two-term agenda.

The senator’s security team, present during the incident, exercised restraint and did not discharge firearms to avoid endangering civilians.

The office condemned the attack, calling it “barbaric and cowardly,” and urged prompt action from the National Police Service.

Authorities have been requested to utilize CCTV footage from the restaurant to identify and apprehend the suspects.

“We call upon the National Police Service to act with urgency and thoroughness in investigating this incident,” the statement noted.

The office also advised against associating the incident with Kisumu residents, highlighting that the senator had freely interacted with locals prior to the attack.

Investigations into the incident are set to commence immediately.
