A Kericho man convicted of defiling and impregnating a 13-year-old girl received a 20-year prison sentence. Victor Kiplangat Cheruiyot was apprehended in 2025 for acts committed from July 15 to July 18, 2021, in Chebiribei Village, Belgut Sub-County.
The court learned that Cheruiyot enticed the child by promising her a dress. Legal proceedings were postponed as the victim initially refused to name the father, choosing to give birth and care for the child herself before returning to her studies.
According to the prosecution team headed by Anthony Karanja, circumstances shifted three years after childbirth.
Cheruiyot started stalking the teenager and later used physical force against her. The situation escalated when he attacked the victim’s brother who tried to stop him.
After the assault, the girl identified Cheruiyot as the father of her baby and filed a report with Sosiot Police Station.
DNA testing later established that the defendant was the child’s biological parent. While imposing the judgment, Hon. Nyakundi highlighted the seriousness of the crime and the lasting psychological and bodily harm caused to the young victim.
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) praised the decision as an important milestone in the continuing campaign to effectively prosecute those guilty of sexual crimes.
