Residents Urged to Cooperate in Fighting Al-Shabaab in Mandera
Security authorities in Mandera County have issued a strong appeal to residents, urging them to actively partner with security agencies in the fight against the Al-Shabaab militant group. The call was made by County Commissioner Amos Mariba, who emphasized that winning the war against terrorism requires unwavering cooperation and information sharing from the local community. He stated that residents are the eyes and ears on the ground and play a pivotal role in denying the militants a safe haven.
The Commissioner’s appeal comes amid ongoing efforts to dismantle Al-Shabaab cells that exploit the vast and porous border with Somalia. He assured the public of their safety and confidentiality, urging them to report any suspicious individuals, activities, or objects to the nearest security office without fear of victimization. The plea also targeted local elders and religious leaders, asking them to use their influence to preach peace and steer the youth away from radicalization.
This community-centric strategy is a cornerstone of the government’s revised security approach in the North Eastern region. By building trust and fostering collaboration, security forces aim to cut off the militants’ supply lines, intelligence, and recruitment networks. The government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting all informants, hoping this assurance will encourage more residents to come forward and play their part in securing Mandera.
