DCI Pursues Over 15 Suspects in Connection with Fuel Protest Violence

by KenyaPolls

Following recent nationwide demonstrations against fuel price increases, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has initiated a search for at least 15 individuals suspected of engaging in criminal behavior during the protests.

On May 22, the agency issued a public notice stating that the suspects face charges including violent robbery, theft, arson, property destruction, and other offenses that compromised public security.

The DCI noted that surveillance cameras captured the suspects committing these violations throughout the nation, causing substantial harm to commercial establishments and public facilities.

According to the announcement, the individuals were documented engaging in unlawful activities that both destroyed property and put innocent citizens at risk.

Authorities have requested assistance from the public in locating the suspects. Citizens who can identify any of the individuals have been encouraged to provide information to local authorities or anonymously through DCI communication channels.

The demonstrations that took place on May 19 and 20 witnessed vehicles being set on fire, educational institutions and other buildings being vandalized, and road blockades that led to clashes with law enforcement in multiple locations.

Law enforcement agencies have begun efforts to apprehend the suspects after officials pledged decisive measures against those involved in illegal conduct during the unrest.

The National Police Service (NPS) emphasized that criminal activities masked as protests would receive comprehensive investigation and prosecution. The service reiterated that while citizens possess constitutional rights to peaceful assembly, any illegal actions under protest banners would face serious consequences.

Separately, transport worker strikes have diminished after negotiations with President William Ruto paved the way for operations to resume on May 26.
