Jubilee Party Deputy Leader Fred Matiang’i, a presidential contender, has harshly criticized the Kenya Kwanza government, claiming it has caused economic difficulties, security issues, and pervasive mismanagement. He cautioned that Kenya will face escalating problems if the current administration continues.
During a Jubilee Party gathering in Kiambu that was postponed in solidarity with nationwide protests and shutdown demonstrations, Matiang’i announced the party would halt political activities for a week to stand with Kenyans facing difficulties.
The former Interior Cabinet Secretary spoke to party officials, candidates, religious leaders, and supporters, explaining that the party’s National Executive Committee, after discussions with former President Uhuru Kenyatta, made the postponement decision after overnight meetings.
“We stand with fellow Kenyans during this shutdown. We are postponing today’s meeting to next week so we can join citizens in reflecting on our country’s crisis,” Matiang’i informed his supporters.
Matiang’i accused President William Ruto’s administration of guiding the nation into economic and social chaos through corruption, inadequate governance, and incompetence.
“The nation is stagnant. Pain is evident everywhere. Fuel prices have doubled our campaign costs, and ordinary citizens are experiencing more hardship. What we see stems from corruption and ineptitude in handling public matters,” he stated.
The Jubilee deputy leader cautioned that Kenya confronts escalating insecurity, growing public discontent, and declining economic conditions, leaving many people disheartened.
“The security situation in this nation is unprecedented. Robberies, intimidation, and lawlessness are widespread. Citizens are angry and dissatisfied. Those familiar with governance can see the country is moving in the wrong direction,” he explained.
Matiang’i additionally faulted the administration for supposedly disregarding concerns raised by religious leaders regarding governance, economic difficulties, and purported government overreach.
“The Catholic bishops have expressed their views. The NCCK has spoken. PCEA leaders have voiced their concerns. Rather than listening, we witness arrogance, disrespect, and total indifference to addressing the nation’s issues,” he stated.
He asserted that the current administration had wasted economic accomplishments achieved during the Jubilee government’s tenure and maintained the former ruling party was ready to regain control and restore stability.
“During our time in government, we did not face the current crises in education, healthcare, and security. Even amid COVID-19, the economy kept growing because all decisions considered ordinary citizens,” he emphasized.
Matiang’i also criticized the government-to-government fuel import system, asserting it had led to skyrocketing fuel prices and increased hardship for average Kenyans.
“Our administration would never engage in fraudulent and illegal deals that make fuel unaffordable for ordinary people,” he declared.
Supporters interrupted the gathering with chants of “one term” directed at President Ruto’s administration, with Matiang’i asserting that the Kenya Kwanza government had neglected citizens’ needs.
“The responsibilities have proven too much for them. Their apparent expertise is exploiting the nation. Kenyans cannot endure these intolerable circumstances,” he stated.
Matiang’i nonetheless encouraged Kenyans to stay hopeful and united, noting that democratic processes offer citizens the chance to choose new leadership.
“Let us remain together, prepare ourselves, and select a new administration that will advance our nation. Kenya deserves improved leadership,” he urged.
He also shared greetings from former President Kenyatta, clarifying that the former Head of State intentionally avoided the Kiambu gathering to show respect for Kenyans experiencing hardship.
“President Kenyatta stated he could not participate in planning party strategies while citizens are suffering. That represents true leadership,” Matiang’i informed the audience.
The gathering also included comments from Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Beatrice Gambo, who echoed Matiang’i’s criticism of the administration and encouraged Kenyans to support Jubilee before the 2027 General Election.
Gambo noted that residents in the Coast region were similarly affected by high living costs and deteriorating economic conditions.
“People are suffering and we must bring change. New leadership will reduce fuel prices and restore hope to families nationwide,” she stated.
Jubilee National Youth Leader Angel Mbuthia also appealed to Kiambu residents to back Matiang’i’s presidential campaign, portraying him as a competent leader who could guide the nation toward economic recovery and stability.
Party officials announced the postponed Kiambu meeting would now take place next week, where Jubilee leaders are anticipated to reveal further political strategies as the party increases preparations for the 2027 General Election.
