Security Heightened in Kitui to Combat Surge in Public Property Vandalism
A major security operation is underway in Kitui County following a spate of vandalism targeting critical public infrastructure. The multi-agency operation, which involves officers from the National Police Service and officials from utility companies, aims to dismantle criminal syndicates responsible for stealing and destroying government property, including road cabros, solar panels, and communication cables.
According to County Commissioner Erastus Mbui, the vandalism has caused millions of shillings in losses and severely disrupted essential services. Stolen cabros have left roads in disrepair, while the theft of solar panels from street lights and public facilities has plunged several areas into darkness, creating a security risk. These are not petty crimes; they are economic sabotage. The vandalism of street lights and road materials directly undermines development and endangers the public, stated Commissioner Mbui.
The crackdown has led to increased patrols and the establishment of strategic checkpoints to screen vehicles transporting scrap metal, which is believed to be the primary market for the stolen materials. Security agencies are also working closely with scrap metal dealers to identify and report suspicious sources of materials. Several suspects have already been arrested and will be prosecuted under the stringent laws against vandalism of public property.
The heightened security measures have been welcomed by local leaders and residents, who have borne the brunt of the damaged infrastructure. The county government has reiterated its commitment to protecting public investments and has called on community members to be vigilant and report any acts of vandalism to the authorities. As the operation continues, its success is seen as crucial for safeguarding the county’s development projects and ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents.
