The National Police Service has detained 56 suspects after violence broke out on June 19, 2026, during a public gathering in Kuresoi North Sub-County, Nakuru County.

Senior government officials, county leaders and members of the public were present at the event.

The service said the 56 suspects remain in custody while inquiries into the incident continue.

Officers also seized several items from the suspects, believed to have been used during the unrest.

Authorities said investigations into the violence have begun, with the recovered items and other evidence being reviewed to determine what happened and who was responsible.

The service added that it is committed to carrying out comprehensive inquiries and ensuring anyone found guilty faces accountability under the law.

Police spokesman Michael Muchiri said officers deployed in the area are searching for additional suspects.

The arrests followed an attack in which at least three people were shot and injured as the violence erupted at the gathering.

The three victims, who suffered gunshot wounds to their hands and legs, were taken to Molo Level 4 Hospital for treatment.

Police said efforts are ongoing to identify the person or people who fired the shots.

One victim, Job Kiprono, who was shot in the right hand, appreciated members of the public for rescuing him and helping him get immediate medical care.

The unrest also caused widespread damage, with at least three vehicles, including one owned by MP Alfred Mutai, vandalised by rival groups.

A bus was set on fire as youths carrying stones and sticks clashed in running battles around the venue.

Despite the disorder, the empowerment event was later restarted under heavy police presence.

Local leaders denounced what they called growing political intolerance in Kuresoi North, accusing politicians of encouraging young people to engage in violent confrontations.

They called on leaders to remain restrained and urged residents to support peaceful political participation to prevent further unrest.

The damaged vehicles were taken to the local police station.
