Turkana, Samburu MPs Call for Enhanced Security in the North Rift
A caucus of Members of Parliament from Turkana and Samburu counties has issued a united call for the immediate enhancement of security operations in the North Rift region to end the persistent banditry and cattle rustling. The legislators, representing constituencies long plagued by cross-border violence, stated that current security measures have been insufficient to dismantle the well-armed and mobile criminal networks. They are demanding a more robust, sustained, and resource-equipped deployment to protect lives and restore stability.

The lawmakers highlighted the severe humanitarian impact of the attacks, which have led to numerous deaths, the displacement of thousands of families, and the loss of hundreds of thousands of livestock. They argued that the insecurity has stifled development, crippled education as children cannot travel to school, and perpetuated a cycle of poverty and retaliation. The MPs emphasized that a state of normalcy cannot be achieved when residents live in constant fear of armed raiders.

Their collective appeal is directed at the National Security Council and the Ministry of Interior. Key demands include the permanent deployment of more Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) units, the establishment of additional police posts in remote, high-risk areas, and the provision of modern equipment and vehicles for security agencies to effectively patrol the vast terrain. The unified voice of the North Rift MPs amplifies the pressure on the national government to treat the region’s security crisis with the urgency and resources it demands.
