Narok County Marks 62nd Madaraka Day with Focus on Conservation and grassroots governance

Narok County joined the rest of the nation in commemorating the 62nd Madaraka Day on June 1, 2025, in a colourful celebration held at Masaantare Comprehensive School in Ololulung’a Ward, Narok South Sub-county. The event was led by Governor Patrick Keturet Ole Ntutu, who was accompanied by County Commissioner Kipkech Lotiatia and other senior county officials.

This year’s national theme—Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs—shaped the county’s reflections on environmental conservation and sustainable resource management. In his address, Governor Ntutu underscored Narok’s critical role in safeguarding marine ecosystems, noting that the Mau Forest Complex, located in the county, is the source of the Mara River, which drains into Lake Victoria and supports delicate marine life downstream.

He reaffirmed the county government’s commitment to collaborate with stakeholders in protecting water towers, promoting reforestation, and ensuring sustainable management of ecological resources that sustain communities both locally and beyond county borders.

Governor Ntutu paid tribute to freedom fighters from Narok who contributed to the liberation struggle, naming General Kurito Ole Kisio, Ole Ngere, and Ole Ngapiani among the heroes whose sacrifices secured Kenya’s independence.

The Governor also highlighted ongoing development initiatives across key sectors such as infrastructure, education, and community governance. He noted the recent passage of the Narok County Village Delineation Bill, 2024, which aims to strengthen grassroots administration and enhance service delivery.

The day-long celebrations attracted residents, local leaders, security agencies, and community groups, who participated in cultural showcases and patriotic observances marking Kenya’s journey towards self-governance.
