Security facility construction halted on Moyale-Marsabit-Isiolo road due to county boundary dispute

The government has temporarily shelved plans to establish a multi-agency security installation along the Moyale-Marsabit-Isiolo road corridor due to a disagreement over the proposed location between Marsabit and Wajir counties.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen revealed the decision following a high-level meeting that brought together leaders from both counties. The security installation was intended to address arms trafficking, narcotics trade, human trafficking, and other cross-border crimes that have plagued the region for years.

Tensions intensified after concerns arose regarding the selected site, which was financed through the Eldas NG-CDF. The dispute triggered protests and raised fears of potential conflict between communities.

After consultations, the government resolved to immediately halt construction at the contested location and abandon it altogether. Regional security teams from the North Eastern and Eastern regions will now collaborate with the National Security Council to identify an alternative site acceptable to both counties.

Murkomen emphasized that the facility is meant to serve national security interests, not those of any specific county. Leaders also consented to organize joint public forums involving local leaders and non-governmental organizations to help alleviate tensions and foster peaceful coexistence.

The longstanding boundary dispute between Wajir and Marsabit counties will also be submitted to the relevant authorities, including the IEBC, for a permanent resolution.

Murkomen commended leaders from both counties for prioritizing peace and assured residents that the government remains dedicated to establishing the security facility at an appropriate location to enhance stability and development in the corridor.

Among the leaders present at the meeting were Marsabit Governor Mohamud Mohamed Ali, Senator Mohamed Chute, Woman Representative Naomi Waqo, Saku MP Col. Dido Raso, Moyale MP Prof. Jaldesa Guyo, Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, Senator Abass Mohamed, Woman Representative Fatuma Jehow, Eldas MP Adan Keynan, and other local leaders.
