Opposition Vows Continued Resistance After Kikuyu Clash

by KenyaPolls

The opposition yesterday declared their commitment to continuing criticism of President William Ruto’s administration, despite being dispersed by police using tear gas and live bullets in Kikuyu constituency, Kiambu, last Friday.
They assured authorities that silence would not be an option, promising to maintain their vocal opposition.
Political figures alleged that the police strategy preventing their entry to Kikuyu, contrary to their plans, was orchestrated by higher authorities.
Democracy for Citizens Party national deputy vice chairman Peter Mwathi expressed surprise at police blocking them despite prior notification of their planned meeting two weeks earlier.
“This brought disgrace to the government. We provided timely information. Yet on the day of the gathering, police reversed our agreement and began dispersing us,” he stated.
He further committed that fear would not deter them, as they would unite to inform the public about their strategy to defeat Ruto in next year’s general elections.
He pledged to continue addressing corruption, misuse of police forces and resources, countering misinformation, and advocating for the opposition’s right to be heard.
“Despite being blocked, we still entered Kikuyu town where residents chanted ‘one term’ for the President and their member of parliament Kimani Ichung’wa,” Mwathi reported.
“We are here to inform the government without fear that we are united to inform citizens about our plans, critique policies, and campaign against the administration, ensuring no one remains in office after next year’s elections. They will all serve only one term,” Mwathi emphasized.
Former Limuru MP Mwathi addressed supporters at Kwambira trading center, urging them to coordinate effectively to keep the party informed about local developments.
The DCP national deputy chairman informed constituents of his intention to seek another term, signaling the commencement of his campaign efforts.
He pledged to challenge what he described as increasing authoritarian practices that prevent the truth from emerging.
Mwathi, who previously chaired the security and administration parliamentary committee during former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, called upon Ruto’s government to respect political parties and their members.
He reported that during the confrontation, numerous individuals were injured, vehicles and property damaged, and businesses forced to close.
Mwathi specifically mentioned that the vehicle of Damaris Waiganjo from Kiambaa was among those struck by live bullets.
He requested Inspector General of police Douglas Kanja to thoroughly investigate the true causes of the Friday unrest preceding the Gachagua-organized meeting.
The opposition leader expressed dissatisfaction with current investigations, urging law enforcement to take their investigative responsibilities more seriously.
Mwathi highlighted that police and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers possess proper training, equipment, and constitutional protections to fulfill their duties effectively.
“We recognize the IG as a well-trained officer who has never compromised during operations. The DCI officers are also well-trained and adept at receiving intelligence reports. We question why they have delayed taking appropriate action,” Mwathi inquired.
