Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Wednesday received a detailed update regarding the ongoing development of the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit (NMPU), as the government intensifies efforts to bolster security and maintain public order in the capital region.

The comprehensive progress briefing was delivered to him by the technical committee responsible for creating the foundational framework for establishing the new policing entity.

This committee is currently focused on developing essential components of the proposed structure, encompassing the administrative framework, service standing orders, and standard operating procedures that will govern the unit’s functioning once it becomes active.

Speaking at his office during the presentation, Murkomen commended the advancements, expressing confidence that the team would develop a command structure oriented toward public service.

Murkomen conveyed his contentment, noting that the team is conducting extensive research by examining some of the globe’s most successful metropolitan police organizations to ensure the new unit incorporates international best practices.

He explained that exposure to these global models is contributing to the formation of a contemporary policing framework that is adaptable, efficient, and suited to the demands of rapidly growing urban areas.

“I am pleased that the team is drawing insights from some of the world’s leading metropolitan police units to develop the administrative structure, service standing orders, and standard operating procedures,” he stated.

According to Murkomen, this comparative analysis is crucial in guaranteeing that the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit is both structurally solid and functionally effective in handling challenges such as urban crime, traffic control, emergency responses, and intelligence-driven policing.

The envisioned unit, Murkomen indicated, will play a vital role in improving metropolitan security by enhancing coordination among law enforcement bodies, fortifying rapid response capabilities, and fostering greater collaboration between police officers and community members.

He highlighted that Nairobi, as an expanding metropolitan center, continues to encounter shifting security challenges necessitating a more specialized and unified policing approach adapted to its distinctive urban setting.

“This unit will substantially improve security and public order throughout the city and neighboring areas. It will enhance responses to emerging security threats, strengthen inter-agency cooperation, and encourage partnership between law enforcement and citizens,” Murkomen remarked.

He further mentioned that the unit will be designed to integrate with current security arrangements, ensuring smooth coordination among the National Police Service, national government administrators, and county-level enforcement agencies.

Attendees at the briefing included National Government Coordination Principal Secretary Ahmed Abdisalan, Inspector General Douglas Kanja, representatives from the Nairobi County Government, and other high-ranking officials engaged in security reform initiatives.

Murkomen stressed that the establishment of this unit is part of wider reforms targeting the reinforcement of internal security and enhancement of service provision in major urban centers nationwide.

He affirmed that the government is dedicated to ensuring the final configuration of the unit is well-resourced, professionally administered, and capable of responding effectively to the evolving security requirements of the capital region.

Once functional, the Unit is anticipated to deliver a more unified approach to crime prevention, public safety, traffic regulation, and emergency situations, while also improving information exchange across various agencies.

President William Ruto initiated the formation of the Unit during the signing of a cooperation agreement with the Nairobi City county at State House on February 17 of this year.
