Medical Union Condemns Hospital Security Breach in Naivasha

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has firmly denounced a serious security lapse at Naivasha County Referral Hospital, where an angry mob forcibly entered the premises, interrupted medical services, and removed a dead patient’s body.

This incident, happening on Monday amid civil disturbances in the region, has raised significant apprehension about the protection of healthcare workers on the front lines. In a statement issued by KMPDU Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah, he noted that the invasion put the lives of doctors and staff at grave risk, transforming a place designated for healing into a dangerous setting.

“We pose a basic question: How can we preserve lives when our own security is perpetually compromised at work?” Dr. Atellah inquired.

The union highlighted that targeting healthcare facilities during public unrest directly jeopardizes the provision of essential medical services. KMPDU appealed to the public to exercise maximum restraint and to treat hospitals as neutral, safeguarded areas.

In addition to the hospital invasion, KMPDU voiced concern over accounts of emergency vehicles being obstructed by protesters. The union stressed that disrupting ambulance transportwhich often involves patients in critical conditionsrepresents a direct threat to human life. Protesters have been asked to allow safe, unimpeded access for all ambulances and medical professionals attempting to reach patients.

Amid escalating tensions, the union has requested both National and County governments to promptly provide sufficient security to Naivasha County Referral Hospital and other healthcare establishments throughout the country.

KMPDU asserted that the government must guarantee a secure and peaceful working environment, enabling medical staff to continue delivering consistent care to the public.
